Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says he talked with President Trump ahead of the Farm Progress Show Wednesday morning about NAFTA and the president understands the importance of the trade agreement to agriculture. Trump has said he might pull the U.S. out of the agreement altogether if renegotiations fail. Secretary Perdue told reporters, “I’m hoping that his conversations now, publicly, or negotiation strategies, are to make sure that Mexico and Canada understand the U.S. is serious about fair trade deals across the economy from all three countries.”
Perdue told reporters at the 2017 Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois that Trump understands agriculture is always at the tip of the spear in ag negotiations –that it’s a risk in renegotiating NAFTA.
