The USDA says cattle placements during July increased year over year for the fifth month in a row.
Placements into feedlots were up 3% at 1.615 million head, which was actually a little bit smaller than what many analysts were expecting. Pasture conditions have declined in some areas and while feed costs have been relatively friendly, the increased supply of beef is limiting profits. By weight, placements of cattle weighing less than 600 pounds were 360,000 head, 600 to 699 pound placements were 235,000 head, and 700 to 799 pound placements were 385,000 head, while placements of cattle weighing 800 to 899 pounds were 370,000 head, 900 to 999 pound placements were 190,000 head, and placements of cattle weighing more than 1,000 pounds were 75,000 head.
