The USDA says domestic red meat production this year continues to run ahead of last year’s record pace.
Beef production in July was up 4% on the year at 2.106 billion pounds and pork production was 2% higher at 1.865 billion, with increased slaughter rates cancelling out slightly lower average live weights. July’s cattle slaughter was 2.612 million head, up 6%, and the average live weight was 1,333 pounds per animal, down 12, and the hog slaughter was 9.018 million head, 3% higher, with an average live weight of 277 pounds, 1 pound lighter.
