The USDA’s June 2017 dairy product production numbers indicate cheese and butter makers may be scaling back production in the face of ample supplies. Cheese and butter production has generally been running at high levels for most of the year because of the ample supply of milk, but demand has been mixed, better domestically than internationally, pushing cheese and butter stocks to record levels several times this year.
At 1.029 billion pounds, total cheese production was down 2.5% from May 2017, but still up 3.2% from June 2016, while butter, at 140.620 million pounds, was 14% below the previous month and 4.8% under a year ago.
