The House Appropriations Committee has voted to lift a ban on horse slaughter in the U.S.
The vote came as the panel approved a USDA funding bill. An amendment that would have continued to block funding for federal inspectors at horse slaughter plants was defeated by a 27-25 vote.
Horse slaughter inspection will continue to be unfunded through September 30th of this year. It remains to be seen whether any slaughter facilities will move to reopen after that date.
