The USDA says a referendum to amend the cranberry marketing order to allow domestic voluntary contributions for marketing and product development has failed.
Wisconsin Cranberry Growers Association President Tom Lochner tells Brownfield many growers assumed the amendment to the marketing order would easily pass. “Grower turnout was low. To be honest with you, the amendment itself was pretty much non-controversial and more of a technical amendment to allow the committee to take funds from outside groups, and most people thought it was going to pass just as a technical fix to the order, and obviously, it didn’t.”
The mail-in referendum was held in ten states including Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.
