Farmers in a total of 21 Wisconsin and Minnesota counties can apply for disaster assistance because of alfalfa winterkill. The USDA’s Farm Service Agency named 10 Wisconsin counties as primary disaster areas. Farmers in nine adjacent counties in Wisconsin and two adjacent counties in Minnesota will also be eligible for FSA emergency loans. Several other FSA programs that don’t require a disaster declaration might also assist affected farmers.
The disaster declaration was announced because of damage caused by repeated freezing and thawing of alfalfa after January 1st.
