An Iowa meat packing plant has been approved to export beef to China. They are the first approved in Iowa since the 13-year ban was lifted two weeks ago. CEO Jeffrey Johnson of Iowa Premium, in Tama, Iowa, says the approval process was similar to shipping anywhere, “The USDA looks at your quality assurance programs and your export verification programs. Also there’s some crate labeling programs. They look at all of our programs, assess them, and if they meet the standard for shipping to China, then they approve us.”
He says Iowa Premium processes Black Angus beef and the Chinese like ALL of the cuts, “That’s the thing that we think is a good advantage for the (U.S.) beef industry in China that they do take a breadth across the carcass.
