State conservationists from seven Midwestern states are in Wisconsin to see how some dairy farms manage manure, nutrients, and crops.
Ag Department Water Quality Section Leader Sara Walling tells Brownfield the host farms are in the Onalaska area, north of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and highlights different cropping and manure management practices. “A lot of the states that we’ll be hosting just aren’t really familiar with the size of the farms that we have, so these are smaller ones that have some fairly sophisticated systems related to solids separation and those kinds of things, and then how they use that manure to their benefit on the crop fields is actually one of the main focuses we’ll be pursuing here.”
Members of the National Association of State Conservation Agencies including Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, South Dakota, and Michigan are attending the tours.
