The USDA projects this year’s U.S. winter wheat crop at 1.246 billion bushels, a 25% drop on the year. Planted acreage this year was a near hundred year low and the USDA also expects the average yield to be down 6.5 bushels per acre from last year’s record of 55.3. Harvested area is expected to be 25.564 million acres, compared to 30.222 million a year ago.
By class, hard red winter production is seen at 737.458 million bushels, compared to 1.082 billion in 2016, soft red winter is expected to be 296.669 million bushels, compared to 345.230 million a year ago, and white winter is projected at a combined 212.265 million bushels, compared to 244.612 million last year.
