Wisconsin’s high-capacity well legislation is awaiting Governor Scott Walker’s signature. The bill to allow the repair, replacement, or sale of existing high-capacity wells without additional DNR permits had previously passed the Senate and passed the Assembly this week on a 62-35 vote.
Wisconsin Farm Bureau President Jim Holte says this bill gives existing well users financial
and regulatory security. “It does not give that farmer or the livestock producer any additional water or any additional opportunity, but it just reaffirms their ability to use the well as their permit has already been granted.”
Opponents including Wisconsin Farmers Union’s Kara O’Conner say there’s no security or certainty if the water dries up.
