A global study led by the University of Michigan compiled data from almost 150 countries and looked at the impact not having enough nutritious food to eat has on mental health.
Researchers found “food insecurity” across all cultures contributes to depression, anxiety and somatic symptom disorder, which occurs when a person feels extreme anxiety about physical symptoms — such as hunger.
