Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue has begun the process of allowing local control of school meal guidelines on whole grains, sodium and milk. He signed a proclamation at a Virginia school Monday allowing those changes — saying it will help relieve “increasing fiscal burdens” for schools as they try to follow the current “stringent” nutrition requirements. The USDA says the existing guidelines cost school districts an extra $1.2-Billion dollars in Fiscal Year 2015. A compromise bill to relax some of the requirements failed to pass Congress last December.
