Cattle and hog marketings in 2016 were bigger than in 2015 and producers made less money on those marketings.
The USDA says cash receipts of cattle, calves, hogs, and pigs last year were worth $82.801 billion, 16% less than 2015, with a gross income of $83.303 billion, also down 16%.
Marketings of cattle and calves were up 4% at 54.3 billion pounds with the U.S. industry re-expanding after drought and poor pasture conditions forced some producers to liquidate and hog and pig marketings increased 2% as that industry bounces back from an outbreak of PEDv.
