The president of the National Pork Producers Council says the Trump administration’s decision to further delay the effective date of the GIPSA livestock rule is welcomed.
Illinois pork producer Ken Maschhoff says the proposed regulation would eliminate competition and open the door to a flurry of lawsuits under the “no competitive injury” provision.
To avoid litigation, he says packers and processors would opt to own their own livestock instead. “We are 100 percent sure that this rule, if implemented, will lead to further consolidation in the industry and further vertical integration,” he says.
