More animal feeding operations will have to report air emissions from livestock waste following a recent federal court of appeals ruling.
The court ruled in favor of environmental groups including the Waterkeeper Alliance, Humane Society of the United States and Sierra Club, and found a 2008 EPA rule exempting all but the largest concentrated animal feeding operations from reporting releases of hazardous substances to be illegal.
The court said EPA’s exemption proposal undermined the agency’s rationale for not requiring notifications of animal-waste-related releases.
