A study says that adding grassland plant species can increase carbon storage capability worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Environmental economics professor Amy Ando at the University of Illinois tells Brownfield the study she helped author put a dollar value on biodiversity. The study determined that going from one to two plant species on 2.47 acres of grassland (a hectare) is worth more than $800 over 50 years.
“Wildly extrapolating, if you add a species to all the lands under CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) that could be worth over $700 million” Ando told Brownfield Ag News.
