The expected weekend freeze in Missouri and much of the Midwest should not be a problem for grape growers.
Dean Volenberg, head of the Grape & Wine Institute at the University of Missouri, says it’s too soon for harm, “Our grapes really haven’t progressed enough where the cold is really going to do a lot of damage. I mean, if we got to where we’re at bud swell or beyond that then this cold temperature would be very detrimental.”
Jim Anderson, with the Missouri Wine and Grape Board, says around mid-April is the time to start being concerned about freezing temperatures and their effects on grapes and grapevines.
