A southeast Minnesota farmer is confident cover crops will improve his bottom line this year.
Ed McNamara of Goodhue has experimented with cover crops the past two growing seasons, and says he drilled a mix of winter triticale, Australian peas, and purple-top turnip into soybean stubble last fall.
“The winter triticale and winter forage peas will start growing when the ground gets warmed up enough, and we plan on harvesting that as a wet feed.”
McNamara’s son has a cow/calf herd, and will shrink wrap the bales allowing the forage to ferment before feeding.
