University of Illinois researchers have found the gene responsible for metabolic resistance to the widely used herbicide atrazine in the broadleaf weed waterhemp.
Atrazine is sprayed on about 80-percent of corn acreage in the U.S. even though resistance is increasing.
The research team had developed a quick test for metabolic resistance but until this latest research did not know which enzyme was responsible.
The researchers say they will develop a second test for resistance and their findings could lead to a new chemical to control waterhemp.
