An extension corn specialist says unseasonably warm conditions in recent weeks have increased the likelihood of a good growing season.
Jeff Coulter with the University of Minnesota tells Brownfield the late winter warmth helps dry up soil, which should allow for an early start to fieldwork.
“Such as a nitrogen application, pre-plant tillage, other types of things like manure applications. From a logistics standpoint, it’s nice to get an early start in the spring.”
He says long-term data shows yields respond favorably to early planting dates.
