For the remainder of Wednesday, showers and locally severe thunderstorms will sweep across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and into the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States, with additional rainfall totaling as much as 1 to 2 inches. Markedly colder air will trail the rain into the Midwest and East, with weekend freezes possible as far south as Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. In contrast, warmth will return to the nation’s mid-section during the weekend and gradually expand eastward.
