A plant pathologist says locating nematode hot spots in fields can help farmers control crop damage while reducing inputs.
“The pest that causes the disease and the disease itself is patchy, so we’re interested in trying to predict ahead of time where those patches are going to occur. If you wait until you see the disease, it’s too late to do anything about it, at least for that year.”
Ann MacGuidwin from the University of Wisconsin says pests like the Soybean Cyst Nematode, Lesion Nematode in potatoes and Root Knot Nematode in cotton get most of their movement from soil tillage, so once hotspots are identified, farmers can focus their treatments, adjust application rates, and save money.
