A consultant says farmers considering succession plans often don’t know their options. Mike Lochner with the Wisconsin Farm Center says when thinking about transitioning the farm to the next generation, it’s difficult to know where to start. “They have no idea where to get started, and just looking for some direction.”
Lochner tells Brownfield the Farm Center helps farmers and their families better understand what options there are. He says, “We try to get you to a point where you have an understanding and an idea of which direction, how you want that estate planning to occur, and how you want the farm succession plan to go forward.”
Lochner says once the farm family knows their options, they can confidently explain their wishes to an attorney.
