The U.S. cattle herd was bigger at the start of 2017 than at the start of 2016. Most of the numbers were very close to pre-report estimates with a notable amount of uncertainty after the mid-year version of the report was suspended because of budget issues. The USDA says the total herd increased by 2% to 93.6 million head, but that was still a little less than what most analysts were expecting.
All cows and heifers that have calved were up 3%, beef cows were also 3% higher, and milk cows had a slight year to year increase.
