A big issue Illinois pork producers face is the call from activist groups for local control over permitting of livestock operations. Illinois Pork Producers Association director Jennifer Tirey tells Brownfield Ag News state control has been in place for 20 years and it works, “The Livestock Management Facilities Act, as it is written right now, really does provide such a great balance between protecting the environment and allowing our livestock industry and our farmers to continue to produce livestock.”
Nic Anderson, with the Illinois Livestock Development Group, says counties do not have the money or the expertise to take that over, “For the most part, my experience is county boards and county governments do not want that responsibility.”
Last week, Illinois Citizens for Clean Air and Water, held a press conference calling for local control.
