The USDA’s cattle on feed report indicates placements during December 2016 were a lot larger than what many analysts had been expecting.
Placements into feedlots, preparing for marketing in the coming months, were 18% more than year ago at 1.795 million head, double the average pre-report estimate and above all expectations. By weight, placements of cattle weighing less than 600 pounds were 435,000 head, 600 to 699 placements were 450,000 head, 700 to 799 pound placements were 450,000 head, and 800 pound and heavier placements were 460,000 head.
