The Hoosier Farmer

Farm Dog of the Year nominations sought

Jun 15, 2026 by Robert Herrington, INFB Marketing

The American Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest, now in its ninth year, celebrates farm dogs and the many ways they support farmers and ranchers. Nominations for the contest are open now and close on July 11.

AFBF, with support from Nestlé Purina PetCare, will recognize the 2027 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year as well as a People’s Choice Pup winner at the 2027 AFBF National Convention in Charlotte.

A panel of judges selected by AFBF will select the Farm Dog of the Year. Any Farm Bureau member who owns a dog can submit a nomination. Judging will be based on helpfulness to the family, playfulness and obedience.

The owner of the Farm Dog of the Year receives a $5,000 cash prize, a year’s supply of Purina Pro-Plan dog food, a $500 travel stipend and two free adult registrations to attend the 2027 AFBF Convention, a trophy plate and a Purina products basket.

“Farm dogs are more than workers, they’re family,” said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. “While they assist with chores, they also offer the companionship that makes tough days a little easier. It has been a pleasure to partner with Purina for the annual Farm Dog of the Year contest, showcasing the important role dogs play in everyday farm life.”

The People’s Choice Pup contest is a popular social media element of the Farm Dog of the Year competition. Members of the public will be invited to vote online for their favorite dog in the People’s Choice Pup beginning in September. Bragging rights, a year’s supply of dog food and a $2,500 cash prize from Purina will be awarded to the People’s Choice Pup along with a trip to the 2027 AFBF Convention.
