Farming is a stressful occupation associated with increased levels of anxiety and depression. Multiple studies show that farmer suicide rates are 2-5 times higher than the national average.
In 2024, American Farm Bureau Federation joined the Farm Family Wellness Alliance, a group of agricultural organizations, dedicated to offering a first-of-its-kind resource to the farming and ranching community: Togetherall. Last year, AFBF began managing the organization with a new name – the Farm State of Mind Alliance – and a goal of expanding the reach of Togetherall, as well as the other existing Farm State of Mind resources, for even greater impact.
The Farm State of Mind Alliance continues to support Togetherall and Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which are available free of charge to farm families nationwide.
Togetherall is a safe, anonymous online peer-to-peer community that is accessible 24/7 and moderated around the clock by licensed mental health professionals. The platform is available to farmers, ranchers and members of their family who are age 16 and older. Users simply set up a profile that assigns an anonymous username. Then, they are able to access a broad network of peers who can listen and offer support.
Farmers and ranchers can also join an agricultural subgroup where they can share or read the experiences of other farmers and support one another. Farming can be tough, and many farmers are reluctant to reach out for support. Anonymous, safe, online peer support is a critical component of mental health support.
For those who need additional support, Togetherall connects farmers and ranchers with agriculturally competent rural mental health professionals through PAS, free of charge.
PAS offers family and individual counseling on topics such as anxiety, depression, financial health, improving sleep, and more. In addition to family and individual counseling services, other available services include financial consultants, elder care specialists, legal consultants and more.
