Representatives from all 92 county Farm Bureaus will meet on Aug. 22 for Indiana Farm Bureau’s annual delegate session to determine the policy positions for the organization for 2027.
Katie Nelson, INFB executive director of public policy, expects several issues to be among the hot topics discussed at the upcoming delegate session, including data centers, the role of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, renewable energy, Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), land use, property taxes, utility prices and the state budget.
“This is setting the stage for 2027, which will be a big session. The General Assembly will be writing the state’s biennial budget, and it will come right after the election, so we’ll have new legislators,” Nelson said.
INFB’s policy development process begins at the local level. Each year, all counties can make policy suggestions or edits.
“Our members have worked hard meeting in their counties to submit policies. Our Issue Advisory Committees have met and studied complex policy topics and have submitted their recommendations. This all culminates in August with Delegate Session,” Nelson said.
The INFB resolutions committee is a core part of the organization's grassroots policy-making process. The 21-member committee, made up of elected county presidents from each district and special committee representatives, met for two days in July to review and consolidate hundreds of member-submitted policy suggestions.
“Those individuals spent two days looking at every policy submitted and decided what goes forward to delegates,” Nelson said.
