Registration is open until June 5 for the 2018 Ag in the Classroom Volunteer Update and Teacher Workshop, scheduled this year for June 15. Registration will be capped at 150, and according to INFB education coordinator Julie Taylor, the event is already more than two-thirds full.

“The Ag in the Classroom update is always a very popular event for teachers and volunteers throughout the state,” said Taylor. “It is an exciting opportunity for educators to learn new strategies and gain new skills for integrating agriculture into their classrooms.”

For the first time, this year the event will take place at Conner Prairie, an interactive history museum in Fishers, Indiana. Throughout the day, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in four breakout sessions of their choosing (facilitated by representatives from Conner Prairie, Dow AgroSciences, Indiana Pork, Indiana Dairy Producers, Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance) and enjoy more than an hour of free time to explore the museum’s various outdoor and indoor exhibits. Lunch is included in the registration fee, as is a tote bag containing a lesson plan booklet and a copy of INFB’s 2018 Book of the Year, John Deere, That’s Who!

“I think our location being Conner Prairie is especially exciting this year because of the direct connection it has to our Book of the Year,” said Taylor. “Both are set in the 1830s. It will be neat for our guests to learn from the book about how John Deere invented the steel plow, and then get an up-close view at the museum of how the original steel plow was built and used. We have a full day of fun planned.”

The 2018 Ag in the Classroom Volunteer Update and Teacher Workshop is open to any teacher, extension educator, student, volunteer or Farm Bureau member looking to learn more about Ag in the Classroom. Activities will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.
