INFB Chief Economist Weighs in on USDA Record Yield Predictions

Indiana Farm Bureau’s Chief Economist Dr. Todd Davis is offering up his insights on the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report released on Tuesday, Aug. 12, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

(Indianapolis) – Aug. 13, 2026 – Indiana Farm Bureau’s Chief Economist Dr. Todd Davis is offering up his insights on the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report released on Tuesday, Aug. 12, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

“The August WASDE is the first report that combines input from farmers along with their data predictions for this year’s crop outlook,” said Davis.

According to the report, Indiana’s corn and soybean yields are currently estimated at record levels of 206 and 62 bushels per acre, respectively. The U.S. soybean crop at 4.51 billion is potentially a record, while the corn crop could be the second largest produced.

“The potential for higher-yielding crops will help in marketing both crops in the current tight margin environment,” added Davis. “The reduced per-bushel cost will help managers in watching the market for pricing opportunities. One challenge a farmer might face in marketing the new crops is the larger inventory still in the bins.”
