Catastrophic flooding in Nebraska this spring had caused more than $1.3 billion in damages as of late March, according to Accuweather, and the effect on many of the state’s farms has been severe as well.
In addition to losing homes and other buildings, livestock and stored crops, Nebraska farmers also have lost hay and other feedstuffs, and they will need to replace miles and miles of fences.
Although they are very appreciative of people bringing hay and other supplies, Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson told INFB President Randy Kron that the best way to help at this point is to make a financial contribution to the NEFB Disaster Assistance Fund. One hundred percent of the donations go directly to assist farmers and ranchers in the flood areas, and donations are tax deductible.
Indiana Farm Bureau will make a contribution to the NEFB Disaster Assistance Fund and also is encouraging individuals and county Farm Bureaus to consider making a donation, Kron said.
Nebraska is accepting donations of supplies as well. NEFB has an exchange site on its website match up needs with supplies, and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture has set up drop-off/pick-up points for items such as hay, barbed wire fencing, wooden posts, T-posts and veterinary supplies. Donors are strongly encouraged to contact their prospective drop-off point before making a donation.
