National Institute for Animal Agriculture Announces Its Annual Conference
The 2017 NIAA Annual Conference Agenda explores the globalization of food production with a prominent line-up of industry, academic and policy experts. The 2017 NIAA Annual Conference Agenda explores the globalization of food production with a prominent line-up of industry, academic and policy experts. The Conference, April 3-6, 2017 in Columbus, OH, will focus on how animals are treated and resources are used worldwide.
Opening general session speakers on April 4th will deal with the economics of trade and the impact of our growing global population on food production.
Ambassador Darci Vetter, former Chief Agriculture Negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, will speak on the "Economic Impact" of food globalization. Ambassador Vetter served as Chief Agricultural Negotiator with the rank of Ambassador at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative from 2014 until January of this year. She was responsible for bilateral and multilateral negotiations and trade policy coordination regarding agricultural trade, including negotiating the Trans Pacific Partnership agricultural package.
Before returning to USTR, Ambassador Vetter served as Deputy Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services at USDA, where she oversaw the department's international activities. She had key responsibilities in international trade negotiations and export assistance programs, and coordinated USDA's role in international food aid and trade capacity building activities.
Ambassador Vetter received her Master of Public Affairs degree and a Certificate in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, and her undergraduate degree from Drake University in Des Moines, IA.
The presentation by Dr. Douglas Southgate, Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University, is titled "More than Nine Billion to Feed in 2050." An economist with a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Douglas Southgate has been a professor at Ohio State University since 1980. He is the author of The World Food Economy.
Southgate has consulted, taught, or carried out research in eighteen African, Asian, Caribbean, and Latin American countries. He held a Fulbright research fellowship in Ecuador in 1987 and returned to that country in 1990 for a three-year assignment with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Speakers at the April 5th general session will focus on viewpoints of consumers and producers, with a look forward to what comes next.
"World Trade from A Consumer Perspective" will be presented by Ken McCarty, Owner/Manager, McCarty Family Farm. After graduating from Kansas State University in Animal Science and Industry, McCarty returned to Rexford, KS where he and his family have grown their dairy from 1,500 milking cows on one site in 2005 to 8,500 milking cows at four different dairies today.
Their dairies currently process approximately 650,000 pounds of raw milk a day and ship all of their product to Dannon Yogurt. McCarty also oversees animal welfare and the certifications associated with it, sustainability initiatives and public relations for the enterprise.
Mark McCulley, VP, Production, Certified Angus Beef LLC, will speak next, on "1 Billion Pounds and International Trade." McCully, leads Certified Angus Beef's efforts to grow supply of Certified Angus Beef brand products and oversees strategies for working with cattle producers, allied industry partners, and the packing and processing industry to grow brand supply.The program annually certifies nearly 4 million head of cattle in the US, Canada and Russia, and supplies consumers worldwide with over 1 billion pounds of Certified Angus Beef brand products.
An Illinois native with undergraduate education at Western Illinois University and post graduate study at Michigan State University, McCully has been with Certified Angus Beef since 2000.
Lonnie King, DVM, MS, MPA, ACVPM, The Ohio State University, will conclude the session with his presentation, "Future of Animal Agriculture." Dr. King is the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University and a professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. Dr. King holds the Ruth Stanton Endowed Chair in Veterinary Medicine and serves as the Executive Dean for the seven health science colleges at Ohio State.
Dr. King was formerly the director of the National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is the recipient of multiple prestigious awards and has served on an extensive number of important health science committees, including seven National Academy of Sciences' Committees, recent work with the FDA's Board of Scientific Advisors and on the Steering Committee for the National Bio-surveillance Advisory Committee to the CDC, and as the current Vice-Chair of the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Microbial Threats to Health.
After the Annual Conference closes, NIAA will host an added forum on April 6th, on animal well-being,"Animal Care Standards – How Laws, Company Commitments, and Public Perception Have Changed the Landscape."
