Sale of historic farm to fund educational programs

Louis Spriestersbach wanted the Clark County farm that had been in his family since 1831 preserved into perpetuity. He also wanted to provide opportunities for youth and the general public to learn about agriculture today and in the past.

He turned to Farm Bureau for help.

Spriestersbach died a few years ago, but on Dec. 4, the Spriestersbach farm, soon to be protected by a conservation easement donated to the George Rogers Clark Land Trust, will be sold and the funds raised will be used to provide scholarships for youth and grants for educational programs aimed at youth, educators and the general public.

“Supported programs will foster a more thorough understanding of farming life, our food production system and our agricultural heritage,” said Mark Thornburg, Indiana Farm Bureau’s general counsel.

The funds will be administered by the Spriestersbach Farm Corp., a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, in cooperation with Indiana Farm Bureau and the Clark County Farm Bureau.
