Drainage 101 to focus on local regulatory issues and conservancy districts

Drainage 101, a seminar on Indiana drainage law, will take place Wednesday, August 26, at the Indiana Farm Bureau building in downtown Indianapolis.

Local regulatory issues and conservancy districts will be covered this year, as will drainage easements, common law and private drainage issues, and other issues.

“We have been doing Drainage 101 for several years and determined that participants need more opportunities to focus on particular issues,” said Justin Schneider, a staff attorney for IFB. “With the numerous facets of government regulation over drainage, we felt that we needed to turn the focus to local issues one year and follow that with a focus on state and federal issues the next.”

The goal of the seminar is to provide attendees with an understanding of the laws and regulations that control drainage of land in Indiana. It is open to farmers, public officials, agency personnel, attorneys and members of the general public.

Continuing education credit is being sought for attorneys and surveyors.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; the program runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Lunch is provided.

Attendees are encouraged to presubmit questions with pictures and/or supporting documents that relate to drainage boards, drainage disputes between landowners, and conservancy districts by mailing them to Indiana Farm Bureau, PO Box 1290, Indianapolis, Ind. 46206, or e-mailing Justin Schneider, jschneider@infarmbureau.org.

Attendance is limited; interested individuals are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The registration fee is $50. Payment or photocopy of payment must accompany the registration form, and a registration is not official until payment is received. The deadline to register is Aug. 7. No refunds will be issued after that date. The registration form and more information are available from the IFB website, www.infarmbureau.org, or by contacting Maria Spellman, 317-692-7840 or mspellman@infarmbureau.org.

The event is sponsored by IFB, Association of Indiana Counties, Indiana Association of County Commissioners, County Surveyors Association of Indiana, Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Indiana Land Improvement Contractors’ Association.
