AFBF Comments on EPA Spray Drift Guidance

Executive Newswatch American Farm Bureau Federation May 2, 2014

On Jan. 29, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency published in the Federal Register two draft guidance documents and requested public comments on those papers. The comment deadline on the two documents, “Guidance on Modeling Offsite Deposition of Pesticides via Spray Drift for Ecological and Drinking Water Assessments for the Environmental Fate and Effects Division” and “Residential Exposure Assessment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Addenda 1: Consideration of Spray Drift,” ended Thursday. AFBF filed comments on both documents.

With respect to regulation of pesticides, AFBF policy opposes politically mandated buffer zones, and supports the use of credible scientific information and realistic assumptions of use. In addition to comments filed by AFBF, a number of other agricultural organizations filed comments expressing concern about EPA’s draft guidance documents; these include the Minor Crop Farmer Alliance, of which AFBF is a member; the Pesticide Policy Coalition, of which AFBF is a member; the Northwest Horticultural Council; and the National Agricultural Aviation Association. Comments and related documents can be found in the docket on this subject at http://www.regulations.gov (search for EPA–HQ–OPP–2013–0676).
